There are some parents who lament that they can’t have any truly adventurous trips now that they’ve got kids. They seem to think that every detail has to be planned out before they leave home. In that context, yes, sure, it can be challenging to get a sense of adventure.
But happily, this line of thinking is based on flawed logic. You’ll need to have some details planned out, sure, but there’s plenty of wiggle room. In fact, the vast majority of your time will be unplanned. So long as you’re at the airport on time (and even that can be avoided if you’re traveling by car/RV), then everything else will be fine — if you trust the process.
With that in mind, we thought we’d put together a list of some family getaway ideas that should offer a healthy dose of fun and adventurous.

Visit the Theme Parks
Want a sense of adventure, but also like the idea of staying in a great hotel? Then visiting one (or more!) of the best theme parks in the United States could be the right move. It’s true that, by taking this approach, you’re somewhat outsourcing the adventure responsibilities, but at least you know that you’re in capable hands. The best theme parks really do offer an unparalleled experience. Not sure where to go? If it’s your first time, then stick to the big hitters, which include:
- Disneyland Park
- Universal Studios
- Disney’s Magic Kingdom
- Cedar Point
Spend Time Outdoors
Is there anything more adventurous than spending time in the great outdoors? It’s one of those things that kids and adults love in equal measure, and it’s not hard to see why. It’s hard not to feel happy when you’re adventuring through a forest, kayaking down a river, or otherwise embracing a life that’s a little more rugged than what you’d usually experience back home. There are two ways to go about spending a night among the trees and starts — in an RV at an RV park, or in a tent at a campsite. They’re both a lot of fun, but the RV option is slightly more comfortable and better for longer stays. Whatever you choose, you’ll find that you’ll have a world of fun adventure right on your doorstep.
At the Beach
Looking for a vacation that is relaxing, fun, and allows you to spend your days in a swimsuit, soaking up the rays? Then a beach vacation could be the perfect solution. This is a great option because there are so many different types of beach getaways you can enjoy. Whether you’re looking for a quiet, rustic beach or one that’s jam-packed with life and activities, you’ll find just what you’re looking for. If you plan on spending your vacation time in the US and you’re looking for some alternative places to stay, then consider Michigan, Alabama, or Delaware — all of those states have incredible beaches, yet they don’t have the same level of crowds as more well-known beach towns across the country.
Explore your own area
Vacations don’t always need to be somewhere different! It can be just as fun to explore your own backyard. Find a new play area, park, restaurant or just try something new!
