Relocating is a fun time; it’s exciting, nerve-wracking, and there is just so much potential attached to moving somewhere completely new and starting life all over again.
But moving home in your local area and relocating hours away or even to the other side of the country are vastly different.
This post is going to look at some tips to help you pinpoint the right location to put down roots and make your move perfect for what you need from it.

Set The Budget Early
First things first, you need to set your budget before the costs spiral. And not where we were talking about the budget for purchasing property or rental fees, we’re talking about moving costs. Truck hire, removal services, storage, travel fees, cleaning, utility setup, furniture replacements, and even higher living costs if applicable.
Before you commit, you need to set out your budget for pre-move, during, and post-move so you can ensure you have covered all of your bases. Then add in a buffer for the unexpected — delayed flights, breakdowns en route, repairs you didn’t anticipate. That security can help you lower stress levels and handle anything unexpected more easily.
Research the Area
We don’t just mean on the listings. It’s going to the area when you can and scoping it out at different times. You need to know things like commute times, local schools, if applicable, grocery stores, hospital medical centers, noise levels, parking, public transportation reliability, etc. It’s these practical factors, relocating to a new place, not just how pretty the property is, or an idea you have built up in your head.
Declutter Before You Pack
Moving to an entirely new location is expensive, and the last thing you want to be doing is paying to cart your junk with you, too. So, before you need to pack, even if you’re just planning, start getting rid of things you don’t want to take with you. You don’t need to get rid of everything, but those items you’ve been putting aside or have forgotten need to be cleared out before you pack. This will save you time when unpacking, and on storing, and transporting fees, too.
Organize Services
While you don’t need to lock in services before you’ve decided on a moving date, it’s a good idea, before committing, to scope out providers in the area to get an idea of pricing, provider reliability, etc. The more you know, the easier it is to avoid tying yourself to the wrong company and not getting the service you think you are. Then, when you are ready to sign up, you know exactly who to go for, as you’re not rushing anything.
Build in Adjustment Time
Not everyone has the luxury of spending a lot of time in their new location prior to moving or even around moving dates. Especially if they’re moving for work. But if you can allow yourself a little bit of time around the move to acclimatize and get used to your surroundings. This will help it feel like home much faster and give you a better idea of the lifestyle you can expect from here on out.
